| File Description | TXT is a standard text file format developed in Microsoft Windows systems. TXT files contain only unformatted text and can be recognized by any text editor or word processing software on Mac and Windows. In Windows, TXT files are created and edited by Notepad, While on Mac, TextEdit is used by default. The ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) character set is the most common format for English-language text files, But for accented and other non-ASCII characters, ISO 8859-1 is commonly used. This is usually chosen by system locale settings. |

When you double click TXT files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected TXT file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open TXT files on WindowsRight-click on the TXT file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the TXT file opener. If you decide to always open TXT files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open TXT files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of TXT files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your TXT file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default TXT file opener app.
