| File Description | IFF is the common file format that may contain image, text, or audio data. In 1985, Electronic Arts in cooperation with Commodore-Amiga developed IFF to make it free of hassle to transfer data between software produced by different companies. IFF is also used as the basis for various file formats, including AIFF. However, most files with .iff extension are in fact ILBM (InterLeaved BitMap) files which is subtype of the Interchange File Format (IFF) used for storing picture data. An IFF file is built up from chunks. Each chunk is defined by four-letter IDs. There are mainly three group chunks:

When you double click IFF files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected IFF file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open IFF files on WindowsRight-click on the IFF file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the IFF file opener. If you decide to always open IFF files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open IFF files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of IFF files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your IFF file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default IFF file opener app.
